Miyoung Kim was born in Seoul Korea and learned Korean traditional dance since 6 years old from her father Yunhak Kim (designated as a Korean National Cultural Treasure) who had transformed traditional Korean dance to its present form for the professional stage. Miyoung Kim won numerous first prizes in dance competitions in Korea and has performed extensively in Asia, Europe and North America.
She has established herself as one of the leading figures in the Korean-Canadian cultural Scene as a dancer, choreographer, teacher and founder of the Korean Dance Studies Society of Canada in Toronto since 1979. Miyoung Kim introduced newly choreographed works at 'Legacies in Culture' in 1998 and 'Sweet Spring' in 1999. Miyoung Kim's most recent recitals entitled 'Dance of Soul' in 1997 and ' We are One!' in 1998 were praised for introducing the essence of traditional Korean dance to the multi-cultural audience and caught the attention of young viewers.
She was awarded the chief artist in Cultural area by the Korea Times Daily in 1998 and the best award in Artistic Achievement by The Korea Central Daily in 1999 and producted "Shin Myung" in 2000 and "Celebrating Choom 50 Years" in 2001. She has been focusing her attention for teaching young Canadians and creating new works which would open a new stage for multicultural Canadian dance history.
